November 5, 2020, Chișinău - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova vehemently condemns the acts of vandalism that took place recently in the Jewish Cemetery in Chișinău.

The destruction of the funerary monuments is a barbaric attack not only on the memory of the Jews of the Republic of Moldova, but also a challenge to the entire Moldovan society.

These actions sow distrust and are damaging the international image of the Republic of Moldova. However, the Moldovan society is naturally open to intercultural and interfaith communication, the specific identities and the intercultural communication being equally valued here. The competent institutions of the Republic of Moldova will investigate these condemnable cases of vandalism in the most transparent and operative way possible.

We emphasize in this way that the Republic of Moldova makes considerable efforts to cultivate the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and the culture of tolerance, including in order to combat anti-Semitism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance. It is in this context that the Republic of Moldova approved the working definition of anti-Semitism at the plenary meeting of the International Alliance for Holocaust Remembrance, adopted the National and International Holocaust Remembrance Day and is determined to honor all relevant international commitments.
