Meeting of Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Aureliu Ciocoi with Ghada Wally, Executive Director of the UN Office in Vienna

27 April 2011, Vienna - Moldova's multilateral cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was the subject of a discussion between Foreign Minister Aureliu Ciocoi and Ghada Wally, Executive Director of the UN Office in Vienna and Director-General of UNODC. The officials discussed the promotion of projects in the area of combating organized crime, recovery of criminal assets, the fight against corruption, the fight against drug trafficking and the identification of best practices in the fight against the scourge of trafficking in human beings.

Aureliu Ciocoi noted that the Republic of Moldova fully participates in the Implementation Review Mechanism of the United Nations Convention against transnational organized crime and its protocols and is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Convention. The Chief Executive also pointed out that one of the most important projects implemented by the specialized organization was the container control Programme, the extension of which to the Republic of Moldova was of particular importance in the context of the development of the Giurgiulesti Free International Port and the increase in the number of import, export and transit operations of goods in containers.

For her part, Ghada Wally highlighted that UNODC will continue to provide expertise in the field of drug control, crime prevention and terrorism in an integrated manner and will support the efforts of the Moldovan authorities in promoting national and international initiatives.

Note: UNODC was created in its current form in October 2002, with responsibility for the implementation of UN programmes in the field. Moldova's cooperation with UNODC is carried out by the Ministry of Interior, the Customs Service and specialized agencies.
