July 2, 2025, Astana – While in Astana, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, held a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart, Murat Nurtleu. This marks the first official visit of a Moldovan foreign minister to Astana since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1992.

During the talks, the two ministers reviewed Moldova–Kazakhstan bilateral relations and expressed mutual interest in enhancing trade exchanges and attracting investments, expanding the legal framework, and launching joint projects in areas of common interest.

The officials underlined the significant potential for developing economic ties between the two countries. In 2024, the bilateral trade volume exceeded USD 40 million. In this context, both sides expressed their intention to organize, later this year, a meeting of the Moldova–Kazakhstan Joint Economic Commission, as a platform for identifying new joint initiatives and supporting ongoing ones.

“Kazakhstan is an important partner for the Republic of Moldova in Central Asia. We aim to transform our dialogue into a concrete economic partnership that brings real benefits to our citizens and creates opportunities for the business communities of both countries. In this regard, the opening of the Moldovan Embassy in Astana is a major step toward strengthening our diplomatic presence in the region,” stated Minister Mihai Popșoi.

The Deputy Prime Minister also briefed his Kazakh counterpart on Moldova’s European integration path, emphasizing that it is a strategic objective rooted in the citizens' aspiration to live in a democratic, secure, and prosperous state.

For his part, Minister Murat Nurtleu welcomed the visit of the Moldovan official and highlighted Kazakhstan’s readiness to implement joint projects in sectors such as tourism, energy, agriculture, and culture. The two foreign ministers also agreed to initiate political consultations between their respective ministries and explore the possibility of launching a direct air route between the two countries.

“Kazakhstan regards the Republic of Moldova as a reliable partner committed to building strong cooperation. We aim to strengthen a long-term partnership based on friendship and mutual support,” stated Minister Nurtleu.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Mihai Popșoi invited his Kazakh counterpart to pay an official visit to the Republic of Moldova.
