The Republic of Moldova and the United Nations

General information about the United Nations

 

The United Nations Organization was founded in 1945 after the World War II with its principles enshrined in the UN Charter, with the view to maintain international peace and security, promote peoples’ wellbeing and human rights.

Nowadays the organization has 193 members who jointly participate in discussions and finding solutions to global issues in spirit of dialogue and cooperation. The main bodies of the United Nations are: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the International Court of Justice.

The work of the United Nations covers a large series of areas such as peacekeeping operations, prevention of conflicts, humanitarian assistance, operational activities for development etc. Moreover, the Organization provides a global platform for debates and decision making regarding the challenges facing the international community like sustainable development, climate change, fight against terrorism, disarmament, peoples’ wellbeing, promotion of democracy and human rights.

The Republic of Moldova and the United Nations

The Republic of Moldova joined the United Nations on 2 March 1992 by the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution AG A/RES/46/223.

Considering the universal character of the United Nations, the Republic of Moldova recognizes the important role of the Organization for the promotion of democracy and human rights, peace keeping and international security, economic and social development, good governance and the respect for the rule of law.

An important role in the promotion of the national interests and priorities at the United Nations is played by the permanent missions of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations and its offices in New York, Geneva and Vienna, as well as in other capitals where the offices of the UN specialized agencies, funds and programmes are located.

Right after the Republic of Moldova has joined the UN family, several UN agencies, funds and programmes have established country offices with the Government’s agreement, with the view to support the promotion of democracy, good governance, prosperity, human rights and the consolidation of a modern, European state, based on the rule of law.

Currently, over 20 specialized agencies, funds and programmes have their representation or project based offices in Chisinau, as follows:

  • United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO);
  • United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO);
  • United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC);
  • United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP);
  • United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE);
  • United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD);

The UN activity in Moldova is carried out in accordance with the UN-Moldova Partnership Framework for Sustainable Development for the period 2018-2022 signed in Chisinau on May 16, 2017, by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, the UN Resident Coordinator and the representatives of the organizations of the UN system in the Republic of Moldova.
