March 30, 2025, Sacramento – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi attended the inauguration of the General Consulate in Sacramento, a key step in strengthening support for Moldovan citizens residing in the United States. The consular office will serve the diaspora in the western U.S., providing fast services without the need for long-distance travel.

The General Consulate, to be headed by Maxim Arghir, will offer a wide range of services, including:

  • Issuance and renewal of Moldovan passports;

  • Notarial services and civil status documents;

  • Assistance for Moldovan citizens in emergency situations;

  • Promotion of economic and cultural relations between Moldova and the U.S.

The opening of this consulate is a clear testament to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' commitment to being closer to Moldovan citizens, no matter where they are. The Ministry will continue to expand and optimize its consular network to better meet the needs of Moldovans around the world, providing them with high-quality services. Mihai Popșoi expressed his gratitude to the U.S. authorities for their support in opening the consulate.

The decision to open a consulate in Sacramento was met with enthusiasm by Moldovans in the U.S., who previously had to travel thousands of kilometers to access consular services. During the event, Mihai Popșoi had a warm conversation with Moldovan citizens and shared the country’s development plans. He emphasized that the only viable path for Moldova’s future is European integration and noted the strong support for this direction from the diaspora.

“My family and I have lived in America for 18 years, and every time we needed official documents, we had to travel long distances. Now, with the new consulate, Moldova feels much closer. It’s fantastic news for all Moldovans in the western U.S.,” said Pavel Celac.

“For years, we’ve hoped Moldova would feel closer. Now we have a direct support point, a stronger connection with our homeland. It’s a significant moment for the entire Moldovan community,” stated Andrian Onilov, a diaspora representative living in the U.S. for 11 years.

Mihai Popșoi also highlighted the valuable role of successful Moldovans in proudly promoting their country around the world.

At the end of the day, together with members of the community, the official attended a screening of the film Moldovan Stories, an event organized by the General Consulate of the Republic of Moldova in Sacramento in collaboration with Noroc Events.
