The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deep regret over the passing of Mr. Ion Ciornîi, a career diplomat, former ambassador, and head of mission at several diplomatic representations of the Republic of Moldova abroad.
Throughout a diplomatic career spanning more than two decades, Mr. Ion Ciornîi held important positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, as well as diplomatic missions in Belarus, the Russian Federation, Lithuania, and Ukraine. In recent years, he served as the Consul General of the Republic of Moldova in Odesa, significantly contributing to promoting our country’s interests in the region and protecting the rights of Moldovan citizens abroad.
From the very first days of the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine, Mr. Ciornîi was on the front line, courageously and with dignity fulfilling his diplomatic mission in an extremely difficult context, risking his life to provide necessary support to Moldovan citizens in danger.
Mr. Ion Ciornîi passed away due to a sudden medical issue while he was in Chișinău on leave.
A dedicated diplomat and remarkable professional, Ion Ciornîi distinguished himself by his loyalty to public service and his substantial contribution to the development of bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and Eastern European countries. Through his work, he responsibly and honorably promoted the image of the Republic of Moldova internationally.
Ion Ciornîi will remain in the memory of his colleagues and all who knew him as an example of devotion, integrity, and professionalism.
In these difficult moments, we extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, colleagues, and friends.
May God rest his soul in peace!
