7 November 2025, Samarkand – The Republic of Moldova has been elected, for the first time, as a member of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the 2025–2029 mandate. The elections took place during the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference.
The Executive Board is one of UNESCO’s main governing bodies. It implements the decisions of the General Conference, monitors the organization’s program implementation, makes recommendations regarding the admission of new member states, and plays a key role in the selection and appointment of the Director-General. The Board may also convene extraordinary sessions and international conferences dedicated to UNESCO’s core areas of activity: education, science, culture, and communication.
Moldova’s election to this body reflects the country’s firm commitment to the values and principles promoted by UNESCO. Through this mandate, the Republic of Moldova aims to actively contribute to strengthening international cooperation in UNESCO’s fields of activity, as well as to promoting intercultural dialogue and free access to information.
“This election confirms the international recognition of the Republic of Moldova’s efforts to promote quality education, protect cultural heritage, and advance science and innovation. Our mandate on the UNESCO Executive Board is an important opportunity to contribute, alongside our partners, to strengthening the values of an open society based on knowledge and mutual respect,” stated Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi.
With this achievement, the Republic of Moldova reaffirms its active and constructive profile on the international stage, demonstrating that the values of education, science, and culture remain essential for sustainable development and for establishing the country as a reliable partner within international organizations.
