The Ottawa Convention was adopted in 1997 and represents the materialization of the international community's efforts in implementing the principles of international humanitarian law, and in particular the prohibition of anti-personnel mines. Moldova signed the Convention on 03.12.1997 and ratified it on 27.04.2000. The Convention on Cluster Munitions provides prohibition of the production, stockpiling, use and transfer of such weapons, clearance of affected land and assistance to victims. Moldova has signed the Convention in December 2008 in Oslo, Norway, and launched the procedures for ratification.

  • Convention on prohibitions or restrictions on the use of certain conventional weapons which may be deemed to be excessively injurious or to have indiscriminate effects(CCW)
  • www.disarmament.un.org www.un.org

This Convention was adopted at the UN Conference in 1980, the document was opened for signature in New York on 10 April 1981. Moldova joined the CCW on 27 April 2000. For Moldova the CCW came into force on 28 March 2001.

The structure of the CCW is complex, so that the Convention itself contains only general provisions on prohibiting or restricting the use of certain categories of conventional weapons, and the specific provisions are found in five additional Protocols to the Convention. Moldova is a party to these protocols, as follows:

    • Protocol I on Non-Detectable Fragments,

    • Protocol II on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Mines, Booby Traps and Other Devices

    • Protocol III on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Incendiary Weapons

    • Protocol IV on Blinding Laser Weapons

    • Protocol V on Explosive Remnants of War.
