9 April 2020, Chișinău - On April 8th, the European Commission released more details on EU assistance accorded globally to cover immediate needs and to overcome the long-term consequences of the epidemiological crisis. The amount of assistance to be provided to the Republic of Moldova through the bilateral program is estimated at 87 million euros. This amount is made up of funds available from other existing European assistance programs in place, which will be redirected to cover the consequences of the crisis.

In the context, Foreign Minister Oleg Țulea stated: “We greatly appreciate the assistance provided by the EU during this difficult time, which comes to support the country's efforts to counter the epidemiological crisis and its consequences. In particular, we welcome the systemic and long-term approach, which provides for immediate measures for the health system, for supporting vulnerable areas and social needs, as well as a comprehensive program for the recovery of the economy.”

This assistance completes the 140 million total funds that have been allocated by the EU to all the countries of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) in the regional assistance program.

We remind that from the regional program for the EaP, the EU has allocated 30 million euros through WHO for medical systems, about 11.3 million for supporting vulnerable groups and social necessities to be capitalized through civil society organizations and about 100 million for the recovery of the economy, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Note: The EU provides assistance through a number of different funding instruments and different procedures. The bilateral programs are intended only for one beneficiary country, and the regional ones cover several countries and focus on objectives of regional importance. In the context of the epidemiological crisis, the EU mobilizes the available resources from the bilateral and regional programs and directs them to overcome the negative consequences. In addition to the aforementioned amounts, the EU will support economic rehabilitation through international financial institutions with a support package worth up to 700 million Euros primarily for small and medium-sized enterprises.
