Mr. Chairman,
Excellences,
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am pleased to join virtually this high-level meeting in discussing the progress, challenges and further needs for effective implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and all biodiversity-related goals and I would like to thank Secretary-General for convening this timely Summit on Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.
The Republic of Moldova acknowledges the limited progress made in the implementation of the main three objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity and encourages all parties to scale up efforts to fulfill them by recognizing the contribution of such efforts to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
From this standpoint, I would like to reiterate the Republic of Moldova’s full support for the ongoing tireless work of the Open-ended Working Group on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
We consider that the outcome framework on biodiversity will serve as a benchmark in the process of transposing at the national level the objective of sustainable consumption of biological diversity by supporting all three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental – in a balanced and integrated manner.
Mr. Chairman,
The Republic of Moldova is firmly committed to the goal 15 (Life on Land) of the 2030 Agenda.
At the beginning of this year, the National Strategy “Moldova 2030” on the sustainable development of the Republic of Moldova was adopted.
The document implies taking on the responsibility to urgent action on biodiversity for sustainable development by creating efficient financial tools and mechanisms for biological diversity and natural ecosystem’s conservation activities.
Given the scale of the resources required to achieve the SDGs, the goal of the Government of the Republic of Moldova as a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity and other multilateral environmental agreements is to integrate ecosystem-based approaches and natural-based solutions to climate change adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk reduction into our strategic planning and cross-cutting policies.
In closing, Mr. Chairman, let me reiterate the Republic of Moldova’s full support for Secretary-General’s efforts to keep on the track and accelerate the implementation of SDGs, inter alia, with emphasis on biodiversity-related goals and targets.
Thank you.
